Ginger Production

Ginger is a tropical crop, but with the right guidance, growers can produce ginger right here in North Carolina, and share in the economic benefits of a crop that can bring $30/lb. At N.C. A&T, we're working on innovative techniques to cultivate ginger in various environments.

Our research focuses on evaluating multiple tissue culture cultivars and generations in various production settings: high tunnels, a greenhouse, a natural wooded area, and under artificially colored shade. Using tissue-cultured ginger seedlings, we evaluate these different environments to mimic all the possible ways growers can get feasible yields across various regions in North Carolina.

We are also conducting a comprehensive study of micro-propagated ginger, investigating color shading's impacts on growth and rhizome. With this new color shade study, we are taking a deeper look into the physiology of ginger rhizomes and leaves.

Our research aims to provide feasible solutions for growers of all scales, across various regions in North Carolina, to implement diverse ginger production methods, potentially increasing yields and profitability while working within resource constraints..
