The department faculty continually strives to achieve the highest quality in the design and delivery of our programs. Our faculty conducts applied research in many engineering and technology areas. Mission
The Department of Applied Engineering Technology prepares students for success in transforming society through innovation and technology leadership. We advance knowledge through applied research and create innovative and responsible solutions to global challenges.
We offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs leading to the BS Degree in Applied Engineering Technology, BS Degree in Automotive Engineering Technology, BS Degree in Computer Graphics Technology, MS Degree in Technology Management, and PhD Degree in Applied Science and Technology.
Our programs serve the diverse needs of students who are interested in pursuing careers in engineering and technology enterprises and government agencies. Our curricula focus on applied science and engineering as well as hands-on learning activities and projects. Our degree programs enable students to apply basic science and engineering principles, technical and management skills to secure application-oriented technical and management positions. Graduates of our degree programs are successful in securing employment in industry and government.
Our graduates are highly sought-after and working for 3D Systems, 3M, Amazon, AT&T, Atlas Copco, Bank of America, Boeing, Cargill, Caterpillar, Collins Aerospace, Cummins, Eaton, Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Goodyear, HAECO, John Deere, Lockheed Martin, Lowe’s, Mannington, Milliken, PepsiCo, Pratt & Whitney, Regal Beloit, Toyota, United Technologies, Volvo, Xerox, and many others. Some of our graduates started their own technology companies. Many of our graduates chose to pursue advanced degrees in engineering or technology management.

The Department of Applied Engineering Technology at N.C. A&T traces its history back to the Trade Program in the School of Mechanical Arts in 1929. The Trade Program became the Technical Institute in 1951. Ten years later, the institute became the School of Industries. In 1967, the Department of Industrial Technology was established to offer a 4-year B.S. program in Industrial Technology with four concentrations: Construction, Electricity and Electronics, Engine Power, and Manufacturing. The department became the Department of Manufacturing Systems in 1989 in the School of Technology. The name of the department was changed to Department of Applied Engineering Technology in 2010. The B.S. in Industrial Technology was accredited by NAIT (now ATMAE). |

The Department of Manufacturing and Automotive Technology was established in the new School of Technology. |

The department name was changed to the Department of Manufacturing Systems. |

1992 |
The department started the M.S. in Industrial Technology (MSIT) graduate program. |

1993 |

2010 |
The department was renamed as the Department of Applied Engineering Technology. |

2011 |
The B.S. in Manufacturing Systems became Applied Engineering Technology. MSIT became M.S. in Technology Management (MSTM). The department launched the B.S. in Motorsports Technology. |

2014 |
The department started offering the MSTM program online. |
|
2016 |
The College of Science and Technology (CoST) was established. The department became a founding department of the new college. |

2018 |

2019 |
The B.S. in MST was changed to Automotive Engineering Technology. |
|
2020 |
Technology Management became a separate concentration in the AST Ph.D. program. |
|
2021 |
The MSTM program started three optional concentrations: Six Sigma, Advanced Manufacturing, and Construction Management. |
|
2022 |
The Computer Graphics Technology (CGT) department was merged with the department. |
