Education doesn’t just happen on our Greensboro-based campus. As a land-grant university, we take seriously our mission to provide, exchange, develop and share what we know with local, regional, state, national and global communities where we have interests. In short, we are engaged in teaching and learning, no matter the location, and with numerous collaborators. We are an engaged partner.
Community engagement has many definitions. We use the Carnegie Foundation definition that says, “Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues and contribute to the public good.” — The Carnegie Foundation
Our community engagement efforts earned us the Elective Classification for Community Engagement from the Carnegie Foundation. We have also been recognized by the Association of Public Land-grant Universities as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity (IEP) University and we are a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium.
But what’s more important is how we can work with you and how you can work with us as we build strong communities and engaged universities.
The campus celebrates the success of our faculty and external partners whose work demonstrates what it means to be an engaged partner at our annual Community Engagement Awards.
The Office of Community Engagement seeks to be the catalyst and unifier of all community-engaged activities for North Carolina A&T State University by cultivating long-lasting partnerships that are intentional with high impact, ultimately driving the university’s commitment to positively impacting our surrounding community as outlined in Preeminence 2030: North Carolina A&T Blueprint.
To guide the university’s expanding engagement with a broad range of communities by cultivating prismatic partnerships with the growing number of leaders, organizations, and businesses within the local, regional/state, national, and global community; advancing the human condition, and facilitating economic growth.
