About The University Jazz Ensemble
The North Carolina A&T State University Jazz Ensemble is the official jazz ensemble of N.C. A&T State University. The ensemble is comprised of a big band, small jazz combo and vocal ensemble. Music played includes the classics of bands like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Miles Davis, etc. as well as contemporary standards from the likes of Roy Hargrove, Kirk Whalum, etc. and international artists like Mulatu Astatke, Hugh Masekela, etc.
Under the leadership of Dr. Jonovan Cooper, The University Jazz Ensemble is in a consistent path of growth. The students work hard each semester to achieve what seemed impossible at the beginning. With guest clinicians coming to work with the students and the band traveling to receive instruction from professionals in the industry, we are determined to rise through the ranks of becoming the best university jazz ensemble in the nation.
The band performs at various school and community functions, travels outside the community, and consists of members from diverse majors and concentrations. The band is an auditioned group. The audition is open to all students at the university who wish to participate. We welcome traditional and non-traditional jazz instruments to audition. We thrive on being unique, so each musician brings his or her own special touch so that each performance is remarkable and better than the last.
