Award-Winning Artist, Author, Common Tapped for N.C. A&T Chancellor’s Speaker Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 22, 2018) – For the final event of the 2017-18 Chancellor’s Speaker Series, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will bring Emmy, Golden Globe, Academy Award and three-time Grammy-winning artist Common to the Gate City at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 26.

The Chancellor’s Speaker Series was created to bring nationally distinguished guests to N.C. A&T for campus dialogue on matters of current and abiding importance to the university community and the world beyond. It is part of the university’s commitment to creating an intellectual climate that encourages the creative exchange of ideas.

Common’s topic of discussion, “Greatness,” will draw upon his own hard work and path to success, as well as his deep interest in helping others strive for and achieve greatness by making a commitment to a greater cause.

Known for his politically and socially conscious perspective and introspective rhymes, Common has successfully navigated the music industry and made a splash on the small and silver screens by taking strategic risks and an innovative approach to his craft. His underground and mainstream appeal has crossed musical genres and generational boundaries.

“The King of Conscious Hip Hop” has produced multiple acclaimed studio albums, including his latest, “Black America Again,” that push the boundaries with raw, yet thoughtful social commentary.

His philanthropic efforts are consistent with his political and social work, much of it conducted through his Common Ground Foundation, which focuses on nutrition, healthy living, financial literacy, character development, and creative expression.

The event will be in Harrison Auditorium on A&T’s campus and is free and open to the public. Tickets will be made available through the University Ticket Office located in Brown Hall, beginning Thursday, April 5. Students must present their valid Aggie One card to receive a ticket. A limited amount of tickets will be made available to the public.
