According to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis, Blacks represented only 9% of employees in STEM-related fields. One study has also shown that Black and Hispanic students either transfer or drop out of these programs at higher rates than white students. Researchers at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University are addressing these challenges by developing an assessment tool to measure historically Black colleges and universities students’ science capital and leverage the information to create strategies that enhance their motivation and retention in STEM.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults living with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing severe illness or complications when exposed to COVID-19. The disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and disproportionately affects minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged populations. Type 2 diabetes is driven by the obesity crisis. Obesity prevalence is especially pronounced in many Southeastern states, including North Carolina.
The North Carolina Diabetes Research Center (NCDRC), a consortium comprised of Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Duke University, hosted a successful virtual workshop for faculty members from academic research institutions in North Carolina and surrounding states during Diabetes Awareness Month. The focus of this year’s workshop was “Addressing Diabetes-related Health Disparities in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.” N.C. A&T leads the NCDRC Enrichment Program, which organized the workshop.

Today, that number has soared to nearly six million people. Oluchi Chukwunyere, a rising senior studying computer science at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been selected by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as a 2020 HBCU Competitiveness Scholar. Chukwunyere is among 44 students selected from 33 HBCUs nationwide to receive the initiative’s highest honor based on academic achievements, campus leadership, civic engagement and entrepreneurial spirit.

Eric Muth, Ph.D., is associate dean for research and graduate studies and a professor of psychology at Clemson.
