EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 29, 2023) – The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation (NBCAHOF) will host its annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta during Hall of Fame Weekend. Among this year’s stellar class of honorees, representing North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael S. Regan ‘98, who will be inducted into the government category.
Each year, graduates of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are inducted into the hall for significant contributions they have made in their respective fields. The NBCAHOF promotes the viability of HBCUs and highlights the accomplishments of their alumni.
Regan, a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, earned his B.S. in earth and environmental science from North Carolina A&T. After earning his MPA from George Washington University, he began his career serving as an environmental regulator in the EPA under the Clinton and Bush administrations from 1998 to 2008. Following his service as an environmental regulator, he worked for eight years at the Environmental Defense Fund as the vice president for clean energy.
Regan went on to serve as secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, where he developed and implemented North Carolina’s plan to address climate change and transition the state to a clean energy economy. He also led negotiations to clean up the Cape Fear River, which had been contaminated by toxic chemicals for years. Additionally, he secured the largest coal ash cleanup in U.S. history while serving as North Carolina’s top environmental official.
On March 11, 2021, Regan was sworn in as the EPA’s 16th administrator. This has made him the first African-American man, the second person of color and the first HBCU alumnus to lead the agency. After being nominated for the position by President Biden, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works voted 14-6 to send his nomination for a full Senate vote, which confirmed his appointment 66-34.
The NBCAHOF induction ceremony is part of the 38th Annual NBCA Hall of Fame Weekend. Other events include The Competition of Black Queens, HBCU Invitational Golf Classic, Legacy of Leaders Alumni Awards, Call to Womanhood and Call to Manhood Symposia, Positive Image Program, and other programs intended to empower and equip HBCU alumni to better serve their alma maters and their communities.
