N.C. A&T Lyceum Series to Host Grammy Award-Winning Saxophonist Kirk Whalum

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Lyceum Series, in collaboration with the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) University Jazz Ensemble, is set to host an evening of soulful jazz featuring Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum. This event, open to the public, will take place Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, 1009 Bluford St.

Five N.C. A&T Students Complete FutureSole PLC powered by Nike Masterclass

Five students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University completed the FutureSole PLC powered by Nike Masterclass, a five-week intensive design program at the Pensole Lewis College (PLC) of Business & Design in Detroit. This program offers in-depth training to help the next generation of historically Black college and university (HBCU) students gain real-world experience in footwear, fashion and design.

Two N.C. A&T Journalism Students Selected as 2024 Chevrolet Discover the Unexpected Fellows

Mattie Moore and Kayla Hare, two multimedia journalism students from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, have been selected as 2024 Chevrolet Discover the Unexpected (DTU) Fellows. They are two of only 10 students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) nationwide chosen for this fellowship.

The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host the 2024 Senior Art Exhibition, which showcases the variety of skills and talents of graduating students in the Visual Arts Program. The exhibition’s opening reception is Thursday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition, which features a diverse range of mediums including painting, sculpture and digital art, will be on display through May 24.

Harper, Ph.D., were selected for Creative Greensboro’s 2024 Greensboro Residency for Original Works (GROW). The program provides an “open flex space for Guilford County-based creative individuals and organizations to produce new and original works that encourage visitation and engagement by the public.”

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University multimedia journalism student Jaydn James recently presented her innovative research study, “How Consistent Blue Light Exposure Affects the Circadian Rhythm (Sleep Patterns) Among Journalism Students,” at the Black Doctoral Network (BDN) Undergraduate Research Poster competition in Atlanta. James’ research was selected earlier this year among abstract submissions from talented students across the nation.

University Galleries Hosts New Exhibition, “Flash Fiction”

Common Thread Theatre Collective Presents “How to Make an American Son”

The Common Thread Theatre Collective, a joint venture between North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Davidson College, will present “How to Make an American Son,” a new play by Christopher Oscar Peña and directed by Holly Nañes. The hard-hitting drama explores what happens when the American Dream collides with the reality of immigration and family. Performances will begin Friday, July 14, at Barber Theatre on Davidson College’s campus.

Common Thread Theatre Collective Presents “Our Journey”

The powerhouse musical “Dreamgirls,” with book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, is one of the most celebrated American musicals of the 20th century. It is a sweeping and inspirational journey through American pop music that chronicles one Motown girl group’s rise from obscurity to superstardom. Inspired by the stories of R&B’s popular superstars, including The Supremes, James Brown, and the roster of artists that helped change the landscape of popular music in the 60s and 70s, “Dreamgirls” is a true depiction of the music business.

N.C. A&T, Alexander to Host “The Big Payback” Discussion and Debate

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) will host a conversation and student-led debate around reparations for Black Americans inspired by the PBS documentary, “The Big Payback.” The event, to be held Tuesday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, will feature “Living Single” actress Erika Alexander, co-director of the film.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Theatre Arts Program tackles one of Shakespeare’s most intimate family tragedies beginning Feb. 23. The full title of the play is “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice,” written by William Shakespeare in 1603. The production is a rare example of a dramatic work by Shakespeare that remained popular in performance during the latter half of the 17th and 18th century and remains relevant today.

The work of a North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University visual arts student will be featured exclusively at the Milwaukee Bucks HBCU Game Night and worn by selected fans .Janiya Barcliff, a junior visual media (graphic) design major in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, won the 2022 Milwaukee Bucks x HBC-YOU Made T-shirt contest. Individuals who attend or formerly attended a historically Black college or university (HBCU) were eligible to compete and only one national winner was selected.

N.C. A&T’s Aggie Writing Scholars Program Goes Beyond Enhancing Students’ Communication

The Aggie Writing Scholars Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has successfully supported and served 45 incoming first-year students since 2019. To “support the expansion of the university’s writing center and writing-intensive courses throughout the university’s curriculum,” the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a historic $500,000 grant to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) at that time.

University Galleries to Host “We Built This,” A History and Legacy of Black Builders Exhibition

The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, in collaboration with Preservation Greensboro, will host a new traveling exhibit titled, “We Built This: Profiles of Black Architects and Builders in North Carolina.” The exhibit, opening Wednesday, Oct. 19, and running through Dec. 9 at the University Galleries, will feature the stories of those who constructed and designed many of North Carolina’s most treasured historic sites.

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and other North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University auxiliaries will participate in the 2022 North Carolina Folk Festival this weekend with various musical performances, extending an invitation to visit the new University Galleries exhibition and will host a booth in downtown Greensboro to engage with festival attendees. The festival is a “three-day celebration of cultural heritage through music, dance, handmade crafts and food” with a mission rooted in appreciating “diverse traditions and contribute to community vibrancy and inclusivity.”

University Galleries to Host Historian’s Discussion on Preserving African American History and Culture

Brea Johnson, public historian and manuscripts librarian for the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University, will delve into the world of preservation and careers in the field of public history.

N.C. A&T’s Black Named Rhoden Fellow for ESPN’s HBCU Journalism Training Initiative

Alexis Black, an honors senior multimedia journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been named to the sixth class of Rhoden Fellows. The program is a training initiative for aspiring journalists from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in partnership with Andscape, a “reimagination, expansion and diversification of The Underfeated’s former platform.” Black is A&T’s fourth fellow, following Alexis Davis, East Dockery and Donovan Dooley’s participation in 2021, 2019 and 2018, respectively. She will join five cohort members from Alabama State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University and Xavier University.

University Galleries to Host Noted African American Artist and Gallery Owner to Discuss the Importance of African American Art Galleries

The HBCU National Center selected Sydney Ross, a rising senior multimedia journalism major at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to participate in its Class of Summer 2022 cohort. The HBCU National Center program was “established by the Honorable Jacqueline M. Lewis to foster experiential learning, mentorship, and networking” and aims to help make internship housing in Washington, D.C. affordable for students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Ross will intern in the nation’s capital this summer with the Black-owned network launched by renowned journalist and commentator Roland S. Martin.

N.C. A&T’s Theatre Arts Program Presents Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Features Alum, Broadway Actor Trinette

The Theatre Arts program at North Carolina A&T State University will present Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" beginning Thursday, April 28. Directed by Miller Lucky Jr., the production is a searing account of what racism does to its victims. It is funny, salty, raw and lyrical highlighting all the complicated emotions of the blues music it celebrates. Jayne Trinette, an alumna of A&T’s theatre program, will star as Ma Rainey.

University Galleries to Host Bias to Discuss History of African American Furniture Making and Design

The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host an in-person program on the “History of African American Furniture Making and Design” on Wednesday, March 30, at noon. The discussion will feature renowned artist and furniture maker Jerome Bias and will delve into the work of African American artisans and how their talent has impacted history and design.
