EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 5, 2024) – Chapter 291 of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has inducted 31 students into the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Graduate students Oludotun Adelusi and Samaneh Ghadami, along with undergraduate students Karima Akiyode, Kendra Barnes, Kevin Brooks, Kaiyah Brown, MaKenzie Brown, , Isaak Gibson, Kaelyn Hendrix, Adam Henry, Deanna Hewlin, Gabrielle Heyward, Micayaela Hodge, Joceline Irick, Chelsea Jacobs, Chandler James, Maya Muldrow, Keona Narcisse, Simone Nelson-White, Andre Noel, Moises Ramirez-Barron, Arlene Ricks, Lania Ridgeway, Jayden Seay, Brionna Tatum, Royce Watson, Kennedy West, Katherine Wilkerson, Georgina Williams and Zaria Williams were installed as the newest members of the chapter during a March 26 ceremony on campus.
Approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni are initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Chapter 291 was chartered Nov. 21, 2003, at North Carolina A&T.
Officers for the 2023-24 academic year are chapter president Margaret I. Kanipes, Ph.D., Honors College dean; vice president Ella Hairston; student vice president Levi Burks, past president Marcia Williams, Ph.D.; secretary Brittany Franklin; treasurer Sharon Wellman; Dawn Nail, Ed.D., public relations officer; and awards officers Alsace-Lorraine Gallop and Hope Jackson, Ph.D.
Chapter 291 earned a Society award earlier this semester for its partnership with North Carolinians Against Gun Violence. The partnership teaches parents and guardians about the importance of gun safety by giving out gunlocks and safe storage information in the Greensboro community.
Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Phi Kappa Phi has chapters on more than 325 college and university campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines. Its mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”
