N.C. A&T comes in at No. 5 overall and tops among public HBCUs.

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 9, 2024) – New national rankings from the Wall Street Journal of America’s top 500 universities recognize North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University as the nation’s No. 1 public historically Black university.

The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse rankings evaluate “how well each college sets graduates up for financial success … how much a school improves students’ chances of graduating and their future earnings,” WSJ says. “We don’t measure reputation, nor the college’s own finances.”

The rankings include 14 HBCU campuses, eight of them public. The top five, in order, are Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Howard University, Xavier University (all private institutions) and North Carolina A&T.

Trailing N.C. A&T among public campuses are, in order: Florida A&M University, North Carolina Central University, Prairie View University, Tennessee State University, Savannah State University, Jackson State University and Alcorn State University.

A&T is among 13 North Carolina campuses included in the rankings, led by, in order, Davidson College, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A&T and UNC-CH are among nine ranked UNC system campuses.
