Bluford Library Receives LSTA Grant to Lower Class Costs, Boost OER Use

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 24, 2020) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University recently received designation as a First-gen Forward institution as part of The Center for First-generation Student Success 2020-21 cohort of First-gen Forward Institutions.
A NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education initiative, the First-gen Forward designation recognizes institutions of higher education that have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students.
“Many of our students are the first to attend and graduate from college. This designation means much more than words on paper,” said Melody Pierce, Ph.D., N.C. A&T vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “It signifies N.C. A&T’s deep-seated dedication to first generation students and our commitment to helping them prevail over the multitide of complicated and diverse issues that many of them face. We will forever be proud to fulfil this role.”
Many of the university’s resources and efforts are provided through TRIO Student Support Services. The program provides a range of services addressing academic and practical skills in an effort to increase persistence, retention, good academic standing and ultimately graduation through tutoring, study skills, financial literacy, summer bridging, advising and academic coaching.
“Being a first-generation student means they're taking risks, stepping outside of their comfort zone, and doing something they've never seen done before in their family,” said Chantal Fleming, executive director of TRIO. “We are here every step of the way to support their academic journey.”
The 2020-21 cohort consists of nationally, diverse institutions with a long-term commitment and demonstrated strategies for first-generation student success.
As part of the cohort, A&T will receive professional development, community-building experiences, and a first look at the Center’s research and resources. Select faculty and staff will be afforded multiple opportunities to engage with peer and aspirational institutions that are also creating environments that improve the experiences and outcomes of first-generation students.
After two successful years in the program, institutions are eligible to apply for the Advisory leadership designation.
