Triad Business Journal Recognizes Pompey with 2023 C-Suite Award

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 26, 2023) – The Triad Business Journal has named Robert Pompey, vice chancellor for Business and Finance at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, among its 15 C-Suite Award winners for 2023.

Pompey has worked for N.C. A&T – his alma mater – for 16 years, overseeing all financial operations and serving on the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet. The magazine previously honored him as its 2012 CFO of the Year.

As leader of A&T’s Division of Business and Finance, Pompey guides its mission to be student-centered while maintaining fiscal integrity and providing quality support services to faculty, staff and external customers. The division, which employs more than 300 people and includes the Office of Budget and Planning, University Comptroller, Facilities, Procurement Services, Human Resources, and Campus Enterprises, aims to be a recognized leader in higher education in the delivery of innovative, quality and customer-driven support services where all employees are valued.

Additionally, Pompey serves on the Cone Health Foundation Board of Directors and as a member of the Gateway Research Park, Guilford Merchants Association, and Oak Ridge Financial Services boards.

Triad Business Journal is recognizing Pompey this year for his management of financial assets that has enabled A&T to not only keep up with the strongest growth trend of any University of North Carolina System institution, but also get ahead of the curve. It noted that his management of relief funding and other financial assets enabled the university to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic stronger than when it began while keeping costs to attend very low for students.

Thanks to Pompey’s financial management of diverse revenue streams, the magazine reported, A&T built and opened the new Harold L. Martin Sr. Engineering Research and Innovation Complex, acquired six student apartment complexes, built a 130,000-square foot Student Center, and will begin work later this year on a 413-bed residence hall. It has also secured $164 million in endowment funding.

Moody’s Investors Service this month upgraded A&T’s issuer and outstanding general revenue bond ratings to Aa3 from A1. The upgrade was driven by material growth in financial reserves, under Pompey’s leadership, and favorable trends in enrollment, up 11% over the past five years.

“The C-Suite role is more about managing and leading than the technical aspects,” said Pompey. “In our business, the ultimate measure is how successful we are in making a difference in the lives of our students and our community.”

A native of Kinston, North Carolina, Pompey began his career as an auditor in public accounting, specializing in higher education. He was a senior audit manager for KPMG for more than 10 years and worked as associate controller for Wake Forest University’s Reynolda Campus for nine years before returning to A&T in 2007.

Pompey earned his B.S. in accounting from A&T in 1987 and MBA from Wake Forest University in 2003. He is a Certified Public Accountant and member of the National Association of Certified Public Accountants.
