N.C. A&T Provost McEwen Receives National Business Education Leadership Award

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 10, 2020) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Provost Beryl McEwen, Ph.D., has received the national 2020 Association for Business Teaching and Research (ABTR) Leadership Award.

McEwen, who is also the university’s executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, was honored with the award during a virtual ceremony recently held by the National Business Education Association (NBEA).

A recognized leader in business, strategic planning, academic accreditation and classroom teaching, McEwen has served in multiple roles at North Carolina A&T since 1995, including chair of the Department of Business Education, dean of the College of Business and Economics and vice provost for strategic planning and institutional effectiveness.

During her tenure as vice provost for strategic planning and institutional effectiveness, McEwen oversaw A&T’s accreditation efforts. She also played a vital part in monitoring institutional progress around the university’s strategic plan, Preeminence 2020, and built systems to facilitate learning outcomes assessment crucial to the plan’s goals and accreditation standards.

As dean, McEwen managed a business college that served more than 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students with degree programs in accounting and finance, business education, economics, management, marketing transportation and supply chain management. Under her leadership, the college earned reaffirmation of its accreditation and successfully launched both its MBA and MBA online programs.

McEwen was inducted into the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Business Education Hall of Fame in 2002 and received the Outstanding Administrator of the Year Award from the North Carolina Business Education Association in 2000. The NBEA previously honored her with the John Robert Gregg Award in recognition of her dedicated and outstanding contributions to business teachers and the profession of business education in 2016 and the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions in the administration of business education in 2014. Triad Business Journal named her to its Outstanding Women in Business list in 2017.

Since 2017, McEwen has represented A&T on the board of Gateway University Research Park and served on the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Board of Trustees. She also has served on the NBEA and ABTR executive boards since 2016. She was a member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Strategic Planning Committee in 2017, national president of Delta Pi Epsilon and chair of its research foundation from 2010 through 2012, and president of the North Carolina Business Education Association in 2003.

McEwen holds a B.Ed. from the University of Technology, Jamaica, and M.S. and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, all in business education.
