N.C. A&T Alumna Gilmore Named 2020 Rangel SEP Scholar

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 17, 2020) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University alumna Allison Gilmore ’20 has become the first woman in the university’s history to be selected as a Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program (Rangel SEP) Scholar.

Gilmore, of St. Louis, served as Student Government Association president during her senior year and graduated in Spring 2020 with a B.S. in journalism and mass communication. She is the third person from North Carolina A&T to be selected for this prestigious, fully-funded program.

Gilmore also was selected as a 2020-21 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant awardee – the sixth in A&T’s history – for a Combined Community-English Teaching Assistantship in Austria. Having worked with Angela Rye as a public policy intern and with U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Gilmore plans to attend graduate school to study international affairs and eventually work for the State Department.

Ebony Tyson ’20 of Detroit, who graduated with a B.S. in criminal justice, was selected as an alternate for the 2020 Rangel SEP. A 2019 Gilman Scholar and 2019 Diversity Abroad Scholar, she interned in Washington, D.C., with the African Faith and Justice Network, is a member of Progressive Toastmasters and worked with Bridging the Gap Services of Greensboro. She intends to earn a master’s degree and become a political Foreign Service Officer to improve foreign policy compliance.

As active University Honors Program (UHP) students, Gilmore and Tyson were recruited to apply for the program through NCAT Extraordinary Opportunities (NCAT EO).

“This marks the first time A&T has had two students formally recognized in the same application cycle for this competitive program,” said Margaret I. Kanipes, Ph.D., North Carolina A&T Honors Program director. “This year was a record-breaker for applications, as the program received more than 1,000 applications for 15 spots. We are thrilled that Allison and Ebony, who exemplify A&T’s commitment to excellence and making a positive global impact, are among those recognized for the 2020 Rangel SEP.”

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program, created in 2002, operates under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. It is designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers.

Scholars live at Howard University, attend classes and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and diverse locations around Washington, D.C., for the six-week program.
