N.C. A&T to Host Virtual Health Equity Symposium, Call for Proposals

EAST GREENSBORO (OCT. 12, 2020) – This year has been rife with tensions and tragedies around race and social justice. Between protests for justice, and the health disparities laid bare by COVID-19, the need to address health and healthcare-related inequalities cannot be overstated. The College of Health and Human Sciences is answering this call by hosting in a two-day virtual symposium on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 for A&T faculty, staff and students, faith communities in Guilford, Rockingham and Alamance counties, partners at Cone Health and NC Action Coalition, and community members. The goal of this year’s symposium is to generate a robust discussion on prevention, health behaviors, healthcare experiences and best practices for moving forward.

Call for Proposals.  Presentations will focus on one of four areas: prevention of health disparities, providing context around social risk factors, health outcomes and action plans for decreasing disparities. (1) Presentations: In 45-minute sessions presenter(s) share research insights in virtual presentations. Presenters should plan to engage the audience and address specific ideas and strategies to help attendees apply research insights to their teaching, research, health care and/or self-care. Proposals for presentations should indicate if they cover prevention, context, outcomes or action steps. All regular presentation submissions should include: (a) a title, (b) name, affiliation, and contact information for the presenter and (c) an abstract. Abstracts should be approximately 300-400 words (maximum 400 words) and briefly detail the purpose of the presentation and how/why it fits the theme of this year’s symposium.

(2) Panel Discussions: In 45-minute sessions presenters will have informed discussions around specific topics relevant to the symposium themes. All panel discussion proposals must include a short abstract (maximum 400 words) detailing the theme of the proposed session. Additionally, you must include full details for all the included participants (see number 1 above). This includes the presider and organizer, in addition to the presenters or panelists. All panel sessions should include 3-5 presenters.

(3) Scientific Posters: Participants will create posters for live streaming using PowerPoint slides. Poster presentations will take place in Zoom breakout rooms and will be recorded.

You may submit abstracts for inclusion in a poster session. All poster submissions should include: (a) the title (b) names, affiliations, and contact information for each author, and (c) a brief abstract. Posters should display relevant objectives, theory, methods, results, and conclusions in a way that is accessible and visually appealing.
