Andrews Named N.C. A&T’s First ESU Luard Morse Scholarship Winner

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 10, 2022) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University student Shang Andrews has been named the 2022 English-Speaking Union (ESU) of the United States Luard Morse Scholarship winner – the university’s first.

Andrews, of Potomac Falls, Virginia, is pursuing a B.S. in computer engineering from the College of Engineering. As the 86^th ESU Luard Morse Scholarship winner, he will receive up to $25,000 to study computer science for a semester during his third year at a university in the United Kingdom. He is considering the University of Birmingham in England, which houses a program that focuses on research fields in artificial intelligence and robotics.

An active member of the University Honors Program, Andrews is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and Institute of Electronic and Electric Engineers, as well as an S.E. Summerfield Endowed Engineering Scholarship recipient. He has participated in programs at Carnegie Mellon University and Miami University and served as a Technical DevOps intern at SAS Inc., where he worked alongside a team of software engineers on tasks including using REST APIs Java Microservice Frameworks to distribute stacks of data to different departments.

“I want to study in the U.K. to make myself uncomfortable. I want to live in a place that does things differently and bring that experience back to my university to better myself in my education,” said Andrews. “I wish to use my time at a British university to know what field of computer science I want to study during my master’s degree program. I would love to share my experiences as an HBCU student in general and as an Aggie in particular with my future U.K. classmates.”

Andrews, who was one of only four finalists for this year’s scholarship, is the first finalist and first applicant from A&T since the program’s inception.

Since 1969, the ESU has provided Luard Morse Scholarships to 86 students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to study in the United Kingdom. These merit awards, which are open to sophomores pursuing a four-year degree, provide up to $25,000 for a semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom. Students in all disciplines are eligible. The scholarship has been awarded to students majoring in economics, philosophy, finance, mathematics, liberal arts and the sciences.

Founded in 1920, the ESU is a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization that employs English as a catalyst to foster global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural opportunities for students, educators and members.
