EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2023) – Following a formal charter process in summer 2022, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University inducted its first cohort of the Tau Upsilon chapter into the prestigious Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society on Sept. 24.
“As demographics change, we have a lot of people who can no longer be called non-traditional because it’s becoming very traditional for people 25 and older to get their bachelor’s degrees and we are pleased to see that happen,” Provost Tonya Smith-Jackon said in ceremony remarks. “It’s all about raising yourself to a higher standard.”

Eleven students were inducted during the ceremony: Hope Evans, Elonnidra Hargrove, Gwendolyn Lomax, Crystal Martin, Ahmad Martin, India Richardson, Elrich Richburg, Sering Secka, Shakirra Staton, Mia Ward and Katherine Wilkerson.
Keynote speaker Sybil Lynch Newman, alumna and Guilford Technical Community College advancement officer, shared her own journey of obtaining a degree as a non-traditional student and encouraged inductees to find and embrace their unique academic path, especially one gained from N.C. A&T.
“No matter what you face, A&T has prepared you and is giving you the tools you need. It is building something in you,” she said.
Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is the oldest and largest national honor society for non-traditional students. Recognized as the official honor society for adult learners by the Association of College Honor Societies, Alpha Sigma Lambda members receive special access to scholarship opportunities; recognition adornment to compliment graduation regalia; national academic achievement recognition for graduate school applications or resumes; and a formal induction ceremony with invited guests.
Members selected for the invitation-only society must have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours at A&T; be 24 or older; maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher; be working on completion of first undergraduate degree; and be in the top 20% of students who meet all qualifications.
