N.C. A&T’s E. Gwynn Dancers to Present 37th Annual Spring Concert

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 5, 2024) – The E. Gwynn Dancers of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will hold their 37^th annual spring concert, “Dancing Griots: Preserving the Legacy,” honoring the rich cultural heritage and artistic vision of the dance company’s founder, Eleanor Gwynn, Ph.D.  

The performance will take place Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium, 1009 Bluford St. It will showcase 10 dance pieces, each crafted to embody the spirit of cultural storytelling and artistic expression.

"We are preserving the legacy of Dr. Gwynn by drawing on the past, meeting the present needs of our student dancers and dance minors, and using the Ghanaian concept of Sankofa,” said Cheryl Stevens, Ph.D., instructor of dance and faculty member in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Among other dances, the event will highlight two compelling performances titled “Church” and “74 Boothwyn.”

“These pieces eloquently narrate the stories and traditions deeply rooted in African cultures, including elements of praise and worship, Afro-funk, and Umfundalai Contemporary African Dance,” said Stevens.

The E. Gwynn Dancers specialize in traditional dances originating from Africa, the Caribbean and South America. Over its 39-year history, dancers have performed nationally and internationally, leaving an indelible mark on places such as New York, Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Ghana, Egypt and Guyana.

“Each dancer’s passion shines through in every movement,” said Melanie McLaurin, Ph.D., teaching assistant professor of dance in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “I have no doubt their extraordinary efforts will be felt and celebrated by the audience.

“Concertgoers can expect an unforgettable evening celebrating the vibrant tapestry of dance and culture that will lift their spirit.”
