EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 3, 2025) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will welcome an outstanding panel for the next edition of the Chancellor’s Speaker Series: “Protecting My Peace,” Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m., in Harrison Auditorium.
Special guests include rising stars, award-winning actors Miles Brown, Marsai Martin and Marcus Scribner. The three are best known for their portrayals of Jack, Dianne and Andre Johnson Jr., respectively, on the hit ABC show “black-ish.” Alumna Kimberly Jackson ’92 will moderate.
As stressors of society continue to permeate personal spaces, it has increasingly become necessary to intentionally develop methods and techniques to ensure well-being. The “Protecting My Peace” conversation will inspire and provide practical tools, tips and advice to students.
Named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 30 Stars Under Age 18” in 2018, Brown secured an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance by a Youth in a Series during his time on “black-ish.” He currently voices the role of Gillington Weber in Nickelodeon’s animated series “Monster High.” Additionally, he stars as Emmet in Bridget Stokes’ “Boy Genius” and portrays a younger version of iconic composer Wayne Shorter in “Zero Gravity” on Amazon Prime. Brown also voiced Young Ekko in the hit Netflix animated series “Arcane.”
Martin has established herself as a star well beyond her years. Her work on “black-ish” has earned her nine NAACP Image Awards and three BET Awards. Most recently, she starred in Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “Spirit Untamed,” as well as Paramount’s “Paw Patrol” feature film. As the star and executive producer of “Little,” Martin earned two NAACP Image Awards and made history as the youngest person to executive produce a major studio film.
Seeking to always uplift young and diverse voices, she has established her own production company, Genius Productions, which signed an overall deal with Universal and has expanded across all platforms, including television, digital and live activations. The company recently announced projects such as “Remix My Space” for Discovery+ and “Fantasy Football,” a feature for Paramount+ made in partnership with The SpringHill Co. and Awesomeness.
Martin has graced the covers of Teen Vogue and Essence, been profiled by Elle, The Hollywood Reporter, TIME, Variety, Deadline, Forbes, BuzzFeed, Refinery 29 and many others.
After four consecutive nominations, Scribner won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his work on “blackish.” He continued his role as Andre Jr. in the spinoff “grown-ish,” leading the sixth and final season.
He can also be seen in the Daniel Goldhaber-directed feature “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” alongside Lukas Gage. Additionally, Scribner is featured in Netflix’s “Along for the Ride,” the independent drama “How I Learned to Fly,” and “Farewell Amor,” which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2020. Aside from his on-screen work, Scribner is an accomplished voiceover actor, most recently voicing Bow in the animated, award-winning hit series “She-Ra.”
A seasoned nonprofit executive and community leader, Jackson is committed to mobilizing people, organizations and resources to address critical community needs. While she has held various corporate positions and successfully launched her own company, Jackson currently serves as executive vice president of the American Cancer Society’s Southeast Region. Under her leadership, the region supports thousands of cancer patients, caregivers and volunteers, collaborates with companies and fundraises over $73 million annually to advance the organization’s mission to end cancer.
Based in Atlanta, Jackson is a sought-after thought leader and speaker in the nonprofit sector. She is also an active member of her alma mater’s community, serving on the North Carolina A&T State University Board of Visitors.
The speaker series is free and open to the public. Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis at the University Ticket Office (Brown Hall), beginning Monday, Feb. 10.
